Maya Bead Spindle - handcrafted primitive style spinning tool - copper bead, wood shaft - fine spinning

May 20, 2012 05:45

When the people of the Earth first started making textiles, at first we used our fingers.

Then, one or more clever people realized that a weighted stick worked much better - so much more efficiently.

With a simple stick stuck through a weight - probably a rock - the People began to make cloth. And an industry, a craft, an art was born.

This is the most basic tool for making yarn or thread. The spindle is light, with a flexible shaft, and can be spun supported or freely - in fact, I do both when I spin with these spindles!

There is no hook; a half-hitch is used to keep the yarn spinning and to create the point of twist.

The shaft is hand shaped by me, and the bead used is an Indian copper bead with black details. The weight and heft is lovely. It spins FOREVER, especially supported on a surface or in a bowl.

This is a great way to get in touch with our textile heritage!

Length: approximately 12 inches
Weight: .6 oz, light

If you'd like to see a demonstration of how to use this spindle, I have a video here:

> LISTING IS FOR ONE SPINDLE, the one with the copper bead. The brass one is also available.
Spindle is shipped in a tube, hence shipping is a touch higher.
